DeKALB COUNTY, Ind. — The Indiana State Police is investigating a fatal crash that took place on I-69 in DeKalb County on Wednesday. According to ISP, the crash took place around 2:15 p.m. at the CR11A interchange, or mile marker 326. Preliminary investigation shows that 22-year-old Mia Stevens of Indianapolis was traveling northbound in a 2008 Ford Edge passenger car at the 326-mile marker. ISP wrote that this area of the interstate currently has a lane closure for bridge work, which resulted in traffic stopped in both lanes during the time of the crash. ISP said Stevens did not notice the stopped traffic in time to fully stop, and instead abruptly swerved from the passing lane to the driving lane in an attempt to avoid a collision. However, this resulted in her vehicle striking the real of a 2024 Volvo semi-tractor/trailer that was stopped in the driving lane. Per ISP, Stevens "...was traveling at highway speed at the time of the collision." This caused Stevens to suffer fatal injuries from the crash. The DeKalb County Coroner pronounced her deceased at the scene. A passenger in Stevens's car suffered critical injuries and was transported to an area hospital. ISP said the driver of the semi-tractor was uninjured. The crash caused northbound lanes to completely shut down for about three hours and traffic to divert both off the interstate and at Union Chapel Road in Allen County. According to ISP, the crash remains an active investigation.
