Nov 13, 2024
LEVERETT, Mass. (WWLP) - Crews worked to put out a brush fire in Leverett Tuesday afternoon caused by the improper disposal of ashes.
According to the Leverett Fire Department, Firefighter Rice, the only member in town and available, was called to a brush fire behind a home. Shortly after, a member of the Department of Environmental Conservation monitoring the fire tower on Mount Toby State Forest alerted dispatch of a large amount of smoke coming from that area.

Members of the Shutesbury, Montague Center, Hadley, Amherst fire department, and DCR worked together to put out the fire before reaching the home. The Leverett Fire Department says the cause was determined to be improper disposal of ashes.
A Red Flag Warning remains in effect, due to extreme drought conditions. Fire officials are reminding residents to take appropriate safety precautions with disposing of ashes, avoid burning or cooking anything outdoors, and make sure to dispose of all smoking materials properly.
