HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) -- A trail that started in Markle, made its way to Georgia and returned to the Hoosier State ended in Huntington Wednesday after a judge sentenced a man found guilty of killing his grandmother to the maximum sentence allowed for murder. The judge sentenced Anthony J. Castleman to 65 years in prison with an additional 20 years for being a habitual offender. Castleman also received 365 days of jail credit for time he has already spent in jail. "This was a shocking and heinous crime," said Adams County Superior Court Judge Samuel Conrad -- who was appointed as a special judge in the case -- during Wednesday's sentencing. ‘I did not commit this crime’: Man found guilty of murder in grandmother’s death defiant Castleman's sentencing comes exactly one year after the Huntington County Sheriff's Office announced on Facebook that officers were obtaining an arrest warrant for him. According to the Facebook post, deputies were dispatched the day before to the home of 72-year-old Bernice D. Eubank -- who is referred to by family as "Dianna" -- after family had not heard from her in days. Authorities found Eubank dead during the welfare check. The aftermath of the discovery led to a manhunt that included billboards appearing across Indiana displaying a photo of Castleman and offering a reward for information on his whereabouts. The U.S. Marshals Service eventually located Castleman in southern Georgia, which led to his extradition back to Indiana. Following Castleman's sentencing, John Chaney, one of Eubank's children, said the sentencing provided him with "relief" knowing that Castleman will receive justice. "We'll never have complete closure, but this helps knowing he will not see the light of day again," Chaney said. On Nov. 1, a jury found Castleman guilty after only nine minutes of deliberations, according to Eubank's family. After being found guilty, Castleman proclaimed his innocence outside the courtroom and said he "did not commit that crime." Castleman and his public defender said they plan to appeal.
