Man gets jail time for conduct at Lowcountry council meetings

BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV) – A man known for his tirades at local council meetings was sent to jail by a Lowcountry judge Wednesday.
Judge Erin Vaux sentenced Skip Hoagland to five days in jail for a series of criminal "decorum violations" and "interrupting public meetings".
"Clearly, a fine does not deter you… in fact, you ignore them. You refuse to pay them," Vaus said in her address to the court.
Hoagland has been cited 22 times since June of 2023 for offenses, including refusing to leave the podium at meetings in Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort County council meetings. Some of the situations went so far that he had to be removed from the meeting by police.

Each of those convictions comes with a $1,087.50 fine. Vaux said that Hoagland had paid some of the previous fines when jail time was threatened.
During Wednesday's hearing in Magistrate Court, Vaux said Hoagland's conduct had gotten "more aggressive" and "more egregious" over time. Because of that, she said she felt like jail time was the only choice.
Hoagland was defiant throughout the hearing, interrupting the judge on multiple occasions.
After the sentence, he was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs by deputies, saying he would never stop doing what he is doing.
Back in 2022, a jury determined Hoagland had to pay then-Bluffton Mayor Lisa Sulka $40 million in actual damages and $10 million in punitive damages for defamatory statements he made in email messages, such as accusations that she committed a crime and was unfit for office.
Hoagland was booked into Beaufort County Jail Wednesday afternoon. Vaux said if he was not able to bond himself out immediately she would make an order releasing him by Thursday.
She added that if he continued to commit these offenses, his next sentence would be longer.
