ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — Attleboro residents are urged to continue cutting back on their water usage as the city works to boost the supply. This comes as the city suffers a "historic" lack of seasonal rainfall, which is relied on for their water supply. "It's not an emergency yet, [but] it's getting there," Attleboro Water Superintendent Kourtney Allen said. RELATED: Attleboro facing water conservation emergency Allen said the city is currently looking at solutions, including establishing an emergency water interconnection over the state line, specifically with the city of Pawtucket. "[Pawtucket is] in a larger watershed and a separate watershed from us, which is good news," Allen explained. "Pawtucket also has about twice the population, but about five times the storage volume that we do." James Decelles, chief engineer of the Pawtucket Water Supply Board, said the city currently has a surplus and is more than willing to lend Attleboro a hand. "We've developed an emergency supply agreement with them over the years," Decelles said, noting that Pawtucket's water infrastructure was built to sustain the city's mills throughout the Industrial Revolution. Attleboro Mayor Cathleen DeSimone said that, when used, the agreement costs roughly $35,000 per week for one million gallons of water a day. That connection is expected to be up and running by the end of the week. Allen said the city is also considering setting up an interconnection with Mansfield, as well as potentially using two wells in front of the West Street water treatment plant.
