MEMPHIS, Tenn. — City Council rejected a special-use permit for the proposed East Region high school in Cordova in a vote Tuesday, meaning it's back to the drawing board for the Memphis-Shelby County school district.
Plans called for the school to be built on Fischer Steel Road near Germantown Parkway.

But city council members Tuesday overwhelmingly voted to reject the site, after parents and business owners voiced concerns about the school's impact on traffic in the area.
There were also concerns about the site's former use as an industrial facility.
The new Memphis-Shelby County school would have served more than 2,000 students currently zoned to Germantown High School.
Plans for a new school in Cordova have been in the works for at least two years, since a deal was reached to transfer the so-called “3G schools” from MSCS control to Germantown, and build a new county school in Cordova.
MSCS has not responded to a request for a comment on Tuesday’s vote.
