BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- An inmate at North Kern State Prison, serving a life term for fatally stabbing his wife, was himself killed in a stabbing attack that authorities say was carried out by three other inmates. Nick Vedol Lopez, 55, was attacked at 7:38 p.m. on Sunday in a recreation yard, according to a release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Correctional officers used pepper spray to stop the assault. Lopez died while being transported to a medical facility, coroner's officials said. Jose Gonzalez, 48, Eric Servin, 37, and Alfred R. Rodriguez, 37, were identified as Lopez's assailants. Three inmate-manufactured weapons were recovered, according to CDCR. An investigation was ongoing. Lopez was serving life with the possibility of parole after being convicted of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his wife in Los Angeles County, according to Los Angeles media. Gonzalez was sentenced in 2006 to life without parole for first-degree murder, according to CDCR. Both Servin and Rodriguez, sentenced in 2018 and 2008, respectively, are serving life with the possibility of parole for second-degree murder.
