INDIANAPOLIS — AT&T has confirmed that outages this week on the west side of Indianapolis were caused by theft and vandalism of copper and fiber cables. In a statement sent Wednesday night to FOX59/CBS4, an AT&T spokesperson confirmed that teams have worked to restore internet service throughout the area. They said the outages were the result of "copper and fiber cable vandalism." One viewer told FOX59/CBS4 on Wednesday that he'd been without internet for almost two days. The viewer reported outages in the area of 1100 Denison Street near Holt Road and Washington Street on the city's west side. "Theft and vandalism of critical communications infrastructure are serious matters that disrupt essential services for our customers, public safety and the community at large," the statement read." AT&T said that the company is "actively working" with local law enforcement to investigate and find those responsible. IMPD said on Wednesday night officials are working to gather more information and that details will likely be made public on Thursday. To make an anonymous tip, call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-TIPS. Officials with AT&T said that customers should report any unmarked or non-AT&T vehicles or people seen cutting/removing cable. They added that the use of copper cables is rapidly declining. "The equipment that supports our copper network is harder to source, so it is difficult to repair or replace the parts when the cables are stolen," their statement read. "We continue to upgrade our customers where possible to newer, more reliable technologies like fiber and wireless." The spokesperson's statement ended by saying that AT&T is committed to customer satisfaction. "Maintaining uninterrupted and high-quality service for customers is our top priority," it read. No other information regarding the thefts and outages was provided.
