NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A legislative committee heard from the New Mexico Secretary of State on Tuesday. She said that for the most part, the recent election went smoothly. One thing they weren't anticipating was the amount of people registering to vote on election day. “We could have never envisioned this many happening. Now we know it can happen,” said New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver. Voter turnout in 2024 was down compared to 2020. “So 66% turnout is kind of what we're looking at. We were at 68% turnout in 2020,” said Toulouse Oliver. Even with fewer people showing up to vote, there was one thing that stood out. The Secretary of State's Office said their busiest day was made busier by the number of people registering to vote on election day. “We got overwhelmed by same-day registration. Over half of the 52,000 we got, happened on election day," said Toulouse Oliver. That's nearly 25,000 people. It caused many polls across the state to have long lines. Even though the election has passed, there are still threats being made against election workers. “I am currently experiencing threats, harassment from even a member of this committee online,” said Toulouse Oliver. Lawmakers raised concerns about election integrity and making sure there were no undocumented immigrants registered to vote. The Secretary of States Office said there are safeguards like requiring a birth certificate and other federal documents to register. Toulouse Oliver highlighted that New Mexico ranked number one in election efficiency by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
