Fort Wayne City Council, Brightpoint partner for small business loans

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — On Tuesday night, Fort Wayne City Council allotted Legacy Funds to Brightpoint.
The cause? A fund for Brightpoint to hand out loans to small businesses.
"I'm so proud of the City Administration, Brightpoint and Fort Wayne City Council for coming together and creating a really good microfinancing program for low-income entrepreneurs," said Russ Jehl, 2nd District City Councilman and Brightpoint board member. "Regardless of income, there are a lot of great people that want to put their blood, sweat and tears into Fort Wayne.
Unlike most expenditures of city money, the $2.5 million contribution won't happen all at once; instead, the city will hand over $500,000 anually.
The other unusual thing is that since loans are returned to Brightpoint with interest - the fund will theoretically always exist for future businesses to take out loans.
"That all goes back into the hold to replenish it for the next round of funds to go out there and help other businesses," said Matt Crouch, Vice President of Community and Economic Development with Brightpoint. "Initially, we'll fund 10 to 20 and then we'll keep on being able to do that in perpetuity."
The long-term hope is that this regenerative fund will be able to get small businesses off the ground in Fort Wayne for years to come.
"It's the difference between their ability to actually start providing those services or selling their products," Crouch said. "As little as $10,000 can be the difference between them starting that or just being an idea that they've always wanted to implement."
