Explosion at Louisville factory injures 11, prompts shelterinplace order

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — A large explosion at a factory in Louisville’s Payne Street area injured 11 people Tuesday afternoon.
According to ABC affiliate WHAS 11, emergency services responded to the scene around 3 p.m. after reports of an explosion at the Givaudan Sense Colour factory, which produces caramel coloring for soft drinks.
Authorities have classified the incident as a “hazardous materials” situation. A shelter-in-place order was issued for a one-mile radius around the factory due to potential risks from the blast, which shattered windows in nearby homes and businesses. Louisville Metro Police and Fire Departments are on scene handling containment and cleanup, while the University of Louisville Hospital reported receiving the injured patients and activated its decontamination unit.
It’s not clear what caused the explosion at the facility.
