BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Historians are always looking for the little bits of history that make a region special, and North Dakota is no exception. Now, hobbyist historians who make up the bread and butter of our local history are being recognized through the Excellence in Local History Award. On Tuesday, November 12, dozens of academics came together to recognize the people who keep our state's history alive. Allan Burke was one of them, receiving the award from the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Hailing from Braddock, Burke dedicated much of his life to preserving a long-forgotten craft: letterpress printing. Bismarck Public Schools partners with Sanford Health to help teachers "I'm certainly not in it for the money or the awards," he states, "but it's a passion." Working with equipment as old as the late 1800s, Burke has preserved old-time art and dozens of historical prints. He also helps with maintaining the Welk Homestead Historic Site. The award was also given to Jon McMillan for founding the Walsh County Historic Preservation Commission. Both recipients say this award has a special place in local historical circles. "It's good for the organization," Burke continues, "and good for volunteers to get recognition." The State Historical Society presented the Heritage Profile Honor Award to Curtis Erickson for his work in historical journalism. They also unveiled the 2014 plaque for the Heritage Center's expansion. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Today's Top Stories SIGN UP NOW
