Jordan Chiles reveals interesting tidbit about bronze medal that was stripped from her at 2024 Olympics

(NEXSTAR) – Jordan Chiles was stripped of a bronze medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris — technically speaking.
The actual medal, though, is still in her possession.
“I have the medal,” laughed Chiles during an appearance on Monday’s edition of the “Today” show. “The medal is mine.”
Chiles’ remarks came toward the end of an emotional interview with Hoda Kotb about the controversy surrounding the gymnast’s performance during a floor exercise during the Paris Games.

During that event, Chiles was initially awarded a score of 13.666, which put her in fifth place. But her score was changed to 13.766 after her coach successfully submitted an inquiry on her behalf, vaulting her ahead of two Romanian competitors and into third place.
Romanian officials then appealed that ruling, claiming the inquiry was submitted only seconds too late, and the arbitration panel overturned the results of the event, stripping Chiles of her medal. USA Gymnastics appealed, providing evidence that the inquiry came before the time limit was up, but the arbitration panel refused to reconsider or offer Chiles an additional bronze medal (thereby allowing multiple competitors to share the award) even when “conclusive new evidence” was provided, according to USA Gymnastics.

“I feel like I recently I have been trying to tell myself I have been OK, the past four, five months, and it’s honestly been a very, very difficult time,” Chiles told Kotb on Monday.
“We didn’t do anything wrong. Everything was very right,” Chiles said, explaining that she and the USA Gymnastics team maintain that she had earned her adjusted score, and that the inquiry was filed within the time limits.

Chiles said she hadn’t spoken to Ana Bărbosu, the Romanian gymnast who was ultimately awarded the bronze, but she called her an “amazing” athlete and said she understands how the process could have affected her negatively.
“Whatever she’s going through, I’m very, very sorry. I’m going through the exact same thing.”
Still, Chiles said she was proud to be part of a history-making all-Black podium at the event — the first-ever in Olympic gymnastics.
“That 13.766 was given to me, that bronze medal was given to me, in the right way,” Chiles said. “That’s why I’m here today. To say that.”
