Blackbrook Audubon will hold a program on “Turkeys in America” at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 at Holden Arboretum in Kirtland. Chuck Jakubchak will discuss the life of a wild turkey and review why the bird is so important to the country, according to a news release. He will share insights on the history of Thanksgiving and outline how that frozen, domesticated bird gets to dinner tables. Jakubchak is a graduate of the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist program in 2008 and has conducted more than 130 nature-themed programs. Although primarily a birder, he has broadened his appreciation of nature to include dragonflies, mushrooms and ferns, the release stated. After the turkey program, Blackbrook will hold their annual ticket raffle of nature- or Christmas-themed books, puzzles, and decorative items and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets cost $1 each or six for $5. Funds raised help Blackbrook purchase Audubon Adventures publications for over 800 kids participating in the Geauga Park District’s Nature Scopes program, the release stated. Blackbrook is encouraging attendees to continue bringing their own beverage containers so they will be eligible to participate in the Bring Your Own Mug raffle. The drawing for a $25 gift card to a nursery or feed store will be held at a future program meeting and the winner need not be present. Holden Arboretum is located at 9550 Sperry Road. Admission will be free that evening for everyone attending the program, according to the release. Blackbrook Audubon covers Ashtabula, Geauga and Lake counties as the local chapter of National Audubon Society. For more information, email [email protected].
