Devin Vassell will likely make his season debut as the Spurs take on the league-worst Jazz. The San Antonio Spurs will get some help on Saturday. After missing the first 9 games of the season, Devin Vassell is set to make his season debut against the Utah Jazz. The wing is listed as probably on the injury report and has been rumored to play during the current home stand. All signs point to him being available on Saturday.
The Spurs could use Vassell as they look to get back to .500. San Antonio’s offense had struggled before an offensive explosion in Thursday’s win over the Portland Trail Blazers. Vassell will give them a shooter and someone who can create some offense for himself.
Vassell’s debut comes against a struggling Jazz squad that is giving up 120 points per game (24th in the NBA). San Antonio blew out Utah in its last matchup, 106-88. Victor Wembanyama had a 5x5 game in a dominant performance. The Spurs will hope to replicate that result and start a winning streak at home.

What to watch for
Devin Vassell’s debut
It will be interesting to see how much rust exists after Vassell missed time recovering from foot surgery. Last year, when Vassell missed time, the Spurs played him off the bench, but it seems like they can’t necessarily afford to do that this season. A starting lineup of Chris Paul, Vassell, Julian Champagnie, Harrison Barnes, and Wembanyama would be one of the best offensive units the Spurs could trot out. Conditioning may be an issue, as Vassell hasn’t played an NBA game since March 29th. Watch to see if Vassell has his legs underneath him and if he can establish a rhythm against a weaker Jazz team.
Which Wemby do we see?
Will the Spurs’ 7-foot-5 big man play assertively and get shots around the paint, or will he be content launching shots from deep? When Wembanyama has gotten the ball closer to the basket, either as a roller or coming off flex screens, he’s been largely effective. Teams have forced him to the perimeter, where he’s shooting just 22.6% from deep. Wemby dominated his last matchup with the Jazz with an all-around game. The Spurs will need more of that to come away with a victory on Saturday.
Can the bench build on a good performance?
The Spurs bench has been shaky to start the season but was great in Thursday’s win over the Blazers. Zach Collins, Malaki Branham, Keldon Johnson, and Blake Wesley all played well as San Antonio’s bench had 61 points. It’s likely the second unit will get a boost with Stephon Castle returning to a backup role now that Vassell is back. Minimizing the drop-off from the starters to the second unit will be a major factor for the Spurs’ success the rest of the season.
