WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — The Warwick parents who were accused of neglecting their three-year-old son before he drowned were arraigned in court Friday.
31-year-old Kaitlyn Nolan and 32-year-old David Holloway face multiple charges, including cruelty to children, child endangerment, and animal cruelty, in connection with the death of their son D.J.
In August 2023 Warwick police responded to a call about a drowning at a home on Gorham Avenue where they found D.J. unresponsive.
He was rushed to Hasbro Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police said surveillance footage showed the boy and his 13-year-old brother Ryan, who is autistic, entering a neighbor’s pool.
Ryan did not recognize that his brother was in danger.
Holloway told police he believed the boys were upstairs at the time, only to discover D.J. face down on the pool deck.
Officers reported that it was not the first incident involving the children wandering into the same pool without permission.
Body camera footage from police showed unsanitary conditions inside the children’s home, including trash, clothing, and human waste scattered throughout the house, with maggots visible in several areas.
Two dogs were also removed from the home, with one of them later euthanized due to its condition.
Police recovered 40 cannabis plants and packaged marijuana, which they say were within a child’s reach.
The judge set $50,000 bail for Holloway and $5,000 bail for Nolan.
