Carytown’s neon sign fixed after apparent vandalism made it say ‘RYTOWN’

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Carytown's month-old neon art-deco sign is fixed after the local business owners who had it installed say it was vandalized, making it read "RYTOWN" when illuminated.
A month ago, the Carytown Merchants Association's years-long project came to fruition -- a $100,000, 18-foot-tall neon sign that greets visitors to the bustling "CARYTOWN," a strip that's home to many business owners just like themselves.

Recently, however, that sign has read "RYTOWN," after what appears to have been an act of vandalism. The association previously told 8News that something was thrown at the sign, causing the lights inside both the "C" and the "A" letters to go out.

As the association had extras of each of the signs' letters made in case something like this occurred, it was just a matter of partnering with the city to arrange to have a lane closed so the work could be done -- which happened on Monday, Nov. 11. According to the association, discussions about the sign's security will take place in the future.
For those looking to visit Carytown during the evening hours, it seems the sign is back to welcoming you with the area's proper name, as these photos from Monday night show.
