BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The community near Linnell Way and Brahma Street will tell you they've been waiting a long time for a new park in their neighborhood. Now the wait is over, and the ribbon's been cut. It's time for the community to enjoy. The Linnell-Brahma Park used to be a five-acre construction site. The only equipment here now is not for working adults; it's for playing kids. A five-acre playground for little ones to enjoy. "It's good, no more dirt flying around, no more trash around the neighborhood," said Jesus Acero, father of three. "We can wash our cars and it will last longer now." This new park, Bakersfield's 65th, comes with plenty of amenities. "We have two playground areas, a 2-to-5-year-old and a 5-to-12-year-old [area]," said Fidel Gonzalez, park construction and facilities planner for the Recreation and Parks Department. "We have two sand volleyball courts…at the north end we have two half basketball courts." There's even a gym area so that the bigger kids can pack on some muscle while they play...a gym area with a sit-up machine this reporter struggled with. Driver in double-fatal collision with BPD vehicle identified The park, funded through a grant from the Parks and Water Bond Act, or Prop 68, also features a mural by 17's own graphic producer, Jesse Moreno. He says the work was created with input from the neighboring community. "We surveyed the community around the park, and they let us know what they would like to see on the mural," said Moreno. "A lot of that was flowers, animals, pets...the Kern River." For those living here, it means their kids have a place near home to play after school or on weekends. "It's perfect for the kids. We can bring them out here and release some energy," said Acero. "It makes me happy," said Acero's 3-year-old son, also named Jesus. For those who worked on it, seeing kids playing on what they built, even well before the ribbon was cut, is a special feeling. "To see a final product completed, and watching the kids enjoy what you worked so hard to put together…it's amazing," said Gonzalez.
