ST. LOUIS — The Rutgers women’s soccer team is headed to the Big Ten Championship game.
It can thank goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer for that.
The junior saved three consecutive penalties in a shootout and the fifth-seeded Scarlet Knights overcame a red card to star Riley Tiernan and advanced past top-seeded USC.
“I had so much confidence because the girls behind me I couldn’t do it without them,” Bodmer said in her postmatch interview with the Big Ten Network. “They are the best team in the world. All credit goes to them. They help me get ready every day. They are the best teammates I could ask for.”

The Trojans (15-1-3) took a 47th-minute lead through Simone Jackson and looked on their way to the title match in their debut season in the Big Ten after Tiernan was sent off for stomping on an opponent.
But the Scarlet Knights (11-3-5) equalized on Ashley Baran’s sixth goal of the season in the 52nd minute and then held on for the remainder of regulation and two overtimes to force the shootout.
Bodmer made seven saves over the 110 minutes, but really took her game to another level in the shootout. She saved all three attempts by USC, while Rutgers was perfect with Allie Post, Shaela Bradley and Emily Mason all scoring.
“The pressure isn’t really on me, the pressure is on the field player to score,” the former Notre Dame High standout said. “I know that going into it so I stay as confident as I can and do whatever I can to save a goal.”
Bodmer’s teammates doused her with ice water after her shootout heroics.
“We’re all just so close,” she said. “We love each other like family. We call each other sisters. I trust them, they trust me, this is like a relationship with a team that I’ve never been a part of before.”
