Nov 07, 2024
UPDATE (8:53 p.m): The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has reopened westbound I-70 between Colby and the Colorado border.
KDOT warns that several other highways are still closed, and winter weather is expected in Colorado, impacting Kansas drivers, through Saturday morning. Drivers should be on the lookout for changing road conditions.
GOODLAND (KSNT) — Kansas transportation officials have closed westbound I-70 heading into Colorado again on Thursday due to winter weather conditions.
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) announced in a press release that officials have closed westbound I-70 at Goodland due to the threat of severe winter weather conditions in Colorado. Drivers are being warned that this closure could last through the weekend. The highway was first closed on Nov. 6 due to wintry conditions.
KDOT said it may become necessary to close additional parts of I-70 or other nearby highways in the state to help prevent drivers from becoming stranded. People traveling through western Kansas are urged to remain alert for changing weather and call 511 or visit kandrive.gov for the latest updates on road conditions.
The National Weather Service (NWS) station based out of Goodland issued an alert for the area on social media for moderate and heavy snow. Winter storm warnings and advisories are in effect in many nearby counties in western Kansas and eastern Colorado.
"Dangerous or impossible travel conditions are likely along the I-70 corridor in western portions of Kit Carson County, CO tonight through Friday night. All secondary roadways will be impacted as well!"
