GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - It might be a bye week for the Packers, but big plays are still being made off the field between the team and the city of Green Bay. Thursday afternoon, the city’s Redevelopment Authority unanimously approved spending $109,701 to remove the Packers Heritage Plaza from the corner of Washington and Cherry streets, paving the way for development in that area. Wisconsin cities ranks among fastest-growing in the United States “We’ve been working cooperatively with the Packers to identify a new site," Mayor Eric Genrich said. "Obviously, they felt more comfortable making that decision on their own. We just really hope that they take into account the founding purpose of the trail and the input of Green Bay when making some of those decisions.” The Packers declined to comment, referring Local 5 to last week’s statement on the matter, which expressed disappointment with the city’s decision to relocate the statues. The city is willing to take on the $109,701 cost, believing that redevelopment will be lucrative for the area. “That’s something we’ve been willing to take on from the beginning, understanding the importance of redeveloping our downtown, creating an additional 268 apartment homes here in downtown Green Bay, and some great amenities on the first floor with a bar and restaurant,” Genrich said. The timeline for the removal and relocation of the statues and artifacts is unclear, but the city says the developer would like them removed within a month for construction to begin. Discover Green Bay hopes to act as a mediator between the city and the team to find a new home for the statues. “We’d love to find a way so the statues can stay in the downtown organization,” Discover Green Bay Executive Director Jeff Mirkes said. “Our organization would love to take the lead in working with Packers leadership and the city of Green Bay to help find the best long-term location for these statues.” Some of the photos and letters displayed in the memorial are peeling or faded, and Mirkes hopes his organization can work with the Packers and original creator Cliff Christl to replace the damaged items. NWTC students bring holiday cheer to National Railroad Museum with hands-on help “It needs an upgrade, it needs a refresh, but it might give us an opportunity with Cliff Christl, the originator and writer of this initiative, to refresh some of this content,” Mirkes said. The Packers Heritage Plaza was built in 2013 by Miron Construction, which will also remove the statues because it is best equipped to do so. The $109,701 amount was determined based on Miron’s estimate.
