SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) -- One of the last surviving wooden railcars from the segregation era is being restored right now at the Georgia State Railroad Museum and an anonymous donor is hoping a matching challenge will help fund the remaining work. The donor has pledged to match monetary donations between now and December 1 up to $50,000. Donations can be made online. The railcar is known as Georgia Railroad #67 and was acquired by the Coastal Heritage Society, which operates the Georgia State Railroad Museum, from a private property in Augusta. Years of restoration work has already been completed and this fundraiser could fund much of the remaining two years of work, said Terry Koller, director of railroad operations at the museum. "This car is unique because of its early era of construction, 1911, also the fact that it is all wood. Very few all-wood cars have survived this long, said Koller. "But more importantly is its significance as a segregated passenger car. This is a part of history that we can't forget. We have to remember the things we did in the past that weren't right and make sure that we don't repeat them. So, that's really the importance here is preserving that story of segregation and teaching future generations about what happened in the past." The car will become a focal point of daily tours and could be seen by more than 30,000 people who visit the museum annually, Koller said. Coastal Heritage Society gets $65k donation for Ga.
