Breastmilk drive in Madera to support NICU babies
Nov 06, 2024
MADERA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Madera County Breastfeeding Coalition is calling on mothers to donate their breastmilk to babies in need at hospital NICUs.
Assembly Bill 3059 was passed in September, lifting barriers hospital NICUs have encountered to distribute donor milk; now, hospitals can distribute milk to babies in the NICU if the milk comes from a milk bank with a tissue bank license.
The bill also gives access to donor milk as an essential medical intervention under insurance plans.
This new legislation has created a new demand for breastmilk in hospital NICUs, and the Madera County Breastfeeding Coalition is setting up shop to collect the nutrient-dense liquid.
The Donor Milk Drive will take place Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Oz Conference Room on 1604 Sunrise Ave. in Madera.
The gathering will also include a raffle, snacks, a free picture with Santa, a goodie bag, and resource tables.
Those planning to make a donation must register online.
