ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Election night proved to be a big challenge for voters looking to register and cast ballots on the same day. In Bernalillo County, the process led to long lines and waiting for hours to vote.  Story continues below Election: New Mexico Election Results Election: Trump wins the White House in political comeback Community: New Mexico Strange: Prominent Ghost Stories in Albuquerque's Old Town The last person to cast their ballot in Albuquerque on election night did so well after the polls closed saying he waited in line for over five hours. "Thank gosh that it is finished," said voter Joe Felix.   Those are thoughts from Felix who finally voted at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday night making him the last person to vote in Bernalillo County for the 2024 presidential election. "To exercise that vote, even if like I mentioned before, if it takes a matter of 30 minutes or 3 hours, or in this case a total of five hours," said Felix.   While Felix and many other voters in line at the University of New Mexico Student Union Building were ultimately happy they got to vote, the hour-long wait was because of how the state and the county processed the same-day voter registration.  "It was an awesome experience, and we waited a long time for this sticker," said voter Calvin Jaramillo.  "From early this morning from 7 am when we first opened up until now, it's been a steady flow. The line has been very, very busy all day long mainly with registrants' students that are registering for the first time, "said Paul Roybal, Presiding Judge, Bernalillo County.  Four New Mexico counties dealt with delays in the overloaded same-day voter registration system Monday morning.  While the New Mexico Secretary of State fixed those IT problems, voting staff at UNM said problems re-emerged in the evening when even larger groups of people turned out to register.  Some hope for more resources can lead to faster lines next election. "We've got more than we ever had to be honest with you. We have eight stations right now, three same-day registration stations I thought that was too much when we first came here because I've been here for the last five years and we've never seen anything like this," said Roybal.  Bernalillo County Clerk Linda Stover declined an interview on the topic on Tuesday but sent a statement.   I’m proud of the strong voter turnout and the community's active participation in our democracy. After every election, we assess what went well and where we can improve. We’re committed to working with the Secretary of State's Office and considering additional staffing and resources to make same-day registration more efficient for future elections. Bernalillo County Clerk Linda Stove The New Mexico Secretary of State's Office told KRQE News 13 that no one was available to talk on Wednesday. At least 19,000 New Mexicans cast ballots on Tuesday with same-day voter registration.
