Kansas teen dies in detention facility, KBI investigating

GEARY COUNTY (KSNT) – Agents with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) are looking into a reported death that occurred at a detention facility on Tuesday in Geary County.
The KBI announced in a press release on Nov. 6 that is investigating the death of a 17-year-old male from Dodge City. He was being held at the detention facility as a result of a child in need of care case. The teen first arrived at the facility in early August, 2024.

KBI agents were called to the Northeast Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City following the reported death. The KBI, by state law, investigates all deaths of prisoners in the custody of Kansas jails and prison. This includes juveniles in state, county or city custody with some exceptions.
The initial investigation has show that personnel at the detention center found the teen unresponsive around 6:50 a.m. on Nov. 5. EMS workers were called to the facility and began resuscitation efforts before transferring him to a local hospital where he was declared dead around 7:40 a.m.
The KBI said an autopsy is scheduled to learn more about how the teen died. the investigation into his death is ongoing.
