Sen. Heinrich currently chairs the Joint Economic Committee which examines how government can work better for working Americans. During his time in office, he has primarily sponsored bills focused on public lands and natural resources. When it comes to crime and fentanyl, Sen. Heinrich faced criticism from his Republican opponent, Nella Domenici, who accused Democratic leadership of allowing the flow of illegal drugs through the border and into New Mexico.
Meanwhile, Sen. Heinrich criticized Domenici for being an outsider who can’t relate to the working class. He argued that having a senior leader in the Senate would better serve New Mexicans.
According to Sanchez, Domenici's main tactical mistake was letting Heinrich frame the narrative of her being an "outsider" early on in his campaign ads.
This is the third time that Sen. Heinrich has been elected to his position. He defeated Republican candidate Mick Rich and Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson in 2018. He was elected to the position in 2012.
