Updated at 9:26 p.m. Vermonters overwhelmingly voted on Tuesday for Vice President Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to be the next president and vice president, though whether the rest of the nation followed suit may not be known for days. The Associated Press called the race in Vermont for the Democratic ticket shortly after polls closed in the state at 7 p.m. Even Vermont’s Republican Gov. Phil Scott said late Tuesday that he’d voted for Harris. In another federal race, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) trounced Republican Gerald Malloy. Sanders’ reelection to a fourth term shows the 83-year-old Burlington resident and progressive icon remains hugely popular in his home state as he continues to rail against income inequality and the war in Gaza. He's long voiced support for health care reform and climate policies such as the Green New Deal. If Sanders serves out his full term, he’d be 89 and one of the oldest U.S. senators to ever serve. On Tuesday, he wasn't ready to say whether this was his last campaign. "Got six years to worry about that one," he told reporters outside his Burlington polling place in the city's New North End. Meanwhile, first-term U.S. Rep. Becca Balint (D-Vt.) easily won a second term as the state's sole member of the House. Balint faced a challenge from Republican and libertarian Mark Coester, a logger from Westminster. In 2022, Balint became the first woman Vermont ever elected to Congress. During debates, Balint expressed strong support for ending the war in Gaza, protecting reproductive rights, pursuing climate change mitigation and adaptation, and campaign finance reform. Coester often chafed at or avoided journalists’ questions and struggled to express comprehensible positions on many issues, though he did support term limits…
