MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Police say a man wanted for attempted first-degree murder is now facing charges of assault after he punched at least two police officers trying to arrest him.
MPD said members of the Fugitive Task Force went to a house in the 2300 block of Lowell Avenue Tuesday morning to pick up Joshua Avery, 33, on an outstanding warrant when they attacked.

According to police, an officer was getting ready to force open the front door when Avery came to the door. The officers said he gave Avery loud verbal commands to come out with his hand up, and Avery opened the door and hit him twice in the head.
Another fugitive team member said he attempted to detain Avery, and Avery punched him in the face. The officer said he was forced to tase Avery to take him into custody.
Avery was also wanted for domestic assault and unlawful possession of a weapon, but police have not released details about the charges. Right now, he is being held without bail.
