ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Tuesday, November 5, is Election Day, and polling locations have been busy with voters weighing in on local ballot measures, local candidates, and the President of the United States. As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, more than 790,000 people have voted statewide, including those who voted early and sent in absentee ballots. The lines to vote have remained busy all day. News 13's Marilyn Upchurch visited polling locations throughout Albuquerque to speak with voters. "It's a right and a privilege," said one local voter, Ralph Padilla. "It's an honor to come out here and elect our leaders, our officials, and the way our government is to be run." Abby Flores, another local voter, said, "I want to be a part of the decision-making process. So, we take our time, we study our voter guides, and we make decisions that we think will help all of Albuquerque, not just ourselves." How The 2024 Election Could Reshape New Mexico Politics New Mexicans are not only casting their votes for President, but also for Senate and congressional seats, county officials, bond measures, and more. So far, 63% of Bernalillo County's 465,000 registered voters have cast their ballots, totaling over 36,000 votes. Bernalillo County Clerk Linda Stover hopes to see 60,000 to 70,000 voters at the polls today, which would bring the total Bernalillo County turnout to 70% of registered voters. "We've been excited during early voting because there's been lines off and on during the day. That was exciting, but this morning, before polls even opened, we had lines waiting to get in," Stover said. In 2020, during the last presidential race, almost 70% of New Mexico's voters cast their ballots, but Stover said the pandemic played a big role in that large voter turnout; four years earlier, in 2016, New Mexico's voter turnout totaled about 62%. Voters can participate in same-day voter registration throughout the close of polls. The same-day registration system was down earlier Tuesday morning, but Stover says the system is back up and running. For New Mexico voting locations and information, click here
