Park City continues to consider housing, hotels, town square in Main Street core
Nov 05, 2024
Park City leaders are continuing to consider a list of projects on Main Street or nearby the shopping, dining and entertainment strip that would transform the core with housing, more retailers, additional hotels, a town square and a gondola connection to Deer Valley Resort. The Main Street Area Plan Committee has spent months debating concepts and some of the ideas would transform the street and close by land. Concepts that continue to be discussed include:The development of income-restricted and employee housing on the land where the Sandridge parking is located off Marsac Avenue.
The re-imagining of the China Bridge garage to include a grocer, a post office, a hotel that would be upmarket and professional, retailers and offices.
The creation of a town square in the area of the Main Street post office with the reuse of the building as well.
The development of a hotel and transit and parking infrastructure on the land on the north side of the Marsac Building and the nearby flagpole parking lot.
The development of a gondola connection to Deer Valley, parking and restrooms in the Brew Pub lot.
The improvement of restrooms at Miners Park as well as “play features” and the honoring of Park City’s heritage.
Improvements to restrooms and a small park-like improvement along 9th Street with support for a gondola at Park City Mountain along the route of the Town Lift, if one is someday pursued by the resort.Park City Councilor Ryan Dickey, the liaison to the Main Street Area Plan Committee, early in the week declined to discuss his top priority from the list of possibilities, saying the elected officials have not yet gathered input from the public.Dickey, though, said the concepts, taken together, are bold and innovative and would lead to a better pedestrian experience than today along what he considers to be “in many ways the crown jewel of Park City.”There would be broad discussions prior to any of the most ambitious concepts. Projects like a gondola connection, hotels and housing, meanwhile, would require extensive approval processes prior to any groundbreakings. The talks are ongoing amid concerns about increased competition for Main Street. Park City leaders and Main Street businesses want to ensure the street remains an attractive place for visitors. The addition of housing for employees in the area of Main Street would be seen as a potential boost for businesses throughout the year with eventually more residents in Old Town. A gondola connection to Deer Valley could deliver customers to Main Street, another boost. Hotels would be expected to have a similar sort of impact, since more people would be staying in the Main Street area. The list of potential projects is expected to highlight two City Hall engagement sessions that are designed to gather opinions from the public about the Main Street Area Plan. The events are scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at Miners Hospital. More information is available on the municipal website, parkcity.org.
