HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) -- It’s been a while since Erline Dennis last taught in a classroom. However, the 104-year-old High Point woman still gets recognized by former students who are now senior adults themselves. “Every once in a while, I see someone who I haven't seen in years. I may have forgotten, but they haven't. They remember very well,” she said. Dennis impacted the lives of young people while working as an educator for almost 40 years. Her career included nearly 20 years as a second-grade and third-grade teacher at Fairview Elementary School in High Point. “I enjoyed them while I had them,” Dennis said. Dennis is also respected in her church community at Greater First United Baptist Church. Friends say they admire her determination. “She really wanted to continue to drive, and she was always ready to do what she needed to do,” her friend Evelyn Williams said. Evelyn takes Dennis where she needs to go since she stopped driving a few years ago. Evelyn's daughter-in-law, Ellen Williams, also helps check on Dennis and take care of her needs. “What I've realized during this journey is though I thought I was here for her, I have realized we're here for one another,” Ellen said. Dennis is grateful that her friends remind her of the importance of maintaining relationships.
