Presidential election: The race to 270
In order to win the presidential election, a candidate must win at least 270 electoral college votes. In the 2020 election, Joe Biden won 306 electoral college votes, while Donald Trump won 232.

Most states award their electoral college votes on a winner-take-all basis. Maine and Nebraska allocate some of their electoral college votes to the overall winner of the state, and others are awarded based on results in each congressional district.

Balance of Power: U.S. Senate
Of the 100 seats in the U.S. Senate, 33 are up for grabs on election night, including one in Texas. A party needs 51 seats for a majority in the Senate. In the event of a 50-50 split, the vice president can cast a tiebreaking vote.
