'Please don't hurt me': Masseuse describes attempted sexual assault at client's sentencing hearing
Nov 05, 2024
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Soon after she began the massage, her client turned over and exposed himself.
After making it clear she didn't perform that type of work, she offered his money back, the masseuse said in a statement read in court Tuesday. The man accepted, and she left the room.
Moments later he emerged, fully naked, grabbed her from a couch and dragged her back inside. She said he wanted to get her pants off.
"I said over and over again, 'Please don't hurt me, I can give you the money,'" she said.
She managed to escape, but the actions of Isaiah Lee Robertson last year at a Downtown Bakersfield massage parlor left her terror-stricken, she said in a statement read by a Mandarin-language interpreter at Robertson's sentencing hearing.
After listening to her statement and remarks by attorneys, Judge John W. Lua sentenced Robertson to life in prison with a minimum parole eligibility date of seven years, plus three years.
Robertson, 29, was found guilty last month of kidnapping to commit rape, assault to commit a sex offense, attempting a sex act by force and indecent exposure.
Before sentencing, Deputy Public Defender Nick Roth told the court Robertson suffered childhood trauma and has a well-documented history of mental health issues.
The incident leading to his arrest occurred the night of Aug. 9, 2023. After escaping, the masseuse ran outside and flagged down a motorist, who called police.
Robertson left by the time officers arrived.
Police released surveillance images. Robertson's housemates recognized him and notified officers; he was taken into custody the next day.
The fear felt by the masseuse lasted much longer.
"I was afraid to go to work," she said. "I couldn't sleep every night."
Robertson's mother attended Tuesday's hearing and asked to give a statement on his behalf. Robertson objected, and Roth made a brief statement instead.
