FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A Selma grape farmer and a Clovis fruit packing company manager, have been found guilty of conspiring to commit crop insurance fraud, the DOJ says. According to the DOJ, 37-year-old Jatinderjeet “Jyoti” Sihota and her family produced table grapes and other crops in Fresno and Tulare Counties. Officials say many of the crops were sold through a fruit packing company where 69-year-old Ralph Hackett was a member and manager. The DOJ says between 2012 and 2016 Sihota and Hackett obtained more than $650,000 in crop insurance payments to which they were not entitled. They made it appear as though the farming operation had suffered significant losses by underreporting the amount of crops sold through the fruit packing company. Sihota pled guilty on Monday and is scheduled to be sentenced on March 3. Hackett was charged separately and has also pleaded guilty; he is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 27. The DOJ says Sihota and Hackett each face a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Hackett also agreed to pay criminal restitution of $650,000 and a separate civil settlement of $605,000 as he directed lower-level employees to participate in the scheme and hid his misconduct from other principals at the company.
