ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — If you drove past East Avenue on your way to work or school this morning, you likely saw a rally full of bright signs and cheerful optimism. The kind you can only find in the future generation of voters!
They may not be old enough to make the pass through the polls themselves, but these civically-minded fifth graders say you can go in their stead! This class from the Genesee Community Charter School rallied the day before Election Day and encouraged passersby to take a detour to the polling places.
What voters in Monroe County need to know before Election Day
“Maybe you have a different opinion than what most people think, but you should let it out there and tell people," said Amelia.
The students just learned about amendments to the Constitution, abolishing slavery, and civil rights for women and people of color. They then decided to get to work!
“We started learning about how segregation and how people fought to end segregation and then to get their rights to vote," Ethan said.
"Now, people don’t vote. People don’t honor them and us kids, like, we kids really care about it, because it’s important for society to keep running," Amelia added.
Their teacher Becki Mason says she’s proud that her students took their lessons to heart and hopes they’ll stay this motivated when it’s their turn to cast their ballots.
“I think that if we don’t get kids thinking about these topics and wanting to do something about these topics, then what will it be like then? Because right now you look at voting trends and less and less people are voting, and I think kids are like the number one people who can make a difference," Mason said.
“I hope we convince at least three people. One person is still one person," Ethan said.
Judging by the honks of the cars alone — they've got their three votes and then some!
