ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — More than 10,000 people are expected to visit the grave of Susan B. Anthony Tuesday, to pay their respects to the local icon and leader of the suffragist movement. Mount Hope Cemetery opens at 8:00 a.m. for those lining up to place their "I Voted" stickers on Anthony's grave. The ritual has been an Election Day tradition for years, but was largely popularized in 2016 by those celebrating the presence of a woman on the presidential ticket. Mount Hope Cemetery officials tell News 8 they are prepared for a similar turnout this year. The cemetery put a protective plastic shield over the gravestone beginning with the 2020 election, after damage caused by the thousands of stickers placed on the marker in 2016. That will remain in place today. Those planning on visiting the grave site can park at the cemetery fountain until 4:00 p.m. Visitors are advised to park on Robinson Drive and walk over before 5:00 p.m. Security from the City of Rochester and members of the Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery will be at the cemetery to help direct visitors. The Rochester Police Department will also be there to help pedestrians cross Mt. Hope Avenue from Robinson Drive. No one will be allowed into the cemetery after 5:00 p.m., but those already in line will be able to stay in line.
