BRUNSWICK, Ga. (WSAV) — The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will have a meeting to discuss the establishment of a new oyster mariculture zone in Glynn County. The Coastal Resources Division (CRD), a branch of Georgia DNR, is asking for the public's input on the zone which would be on Jointer Creek. The meeting will be on Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. at CRD's Susan Shipman Environmental Learning Center, One Conservation Way in Brunswick. CRD said that staff will present information such as its potential benefits, general information and the lottery process for lease allocation. There is a video on their website which will be shown at the meeting. 3 Georgia State Parks introduce colorblind-adapting glasses The Joiner Creek zone covers approximately 31 acres and, according to CRD, will be configured with individual leases of 7.5 acres each. CRD said that leases are set to be spaced at least 100 feet apart, and a central 100-foot-wide easement channel will ensure safe navigation for vessels at low tide. A public comment period will be open from Nov. 14 to Nov. 29, 2024. Written comments can be mailed to Michael Mock at One Conservation Way, Brunswick, GA 31520, or provided using an online form. The forms can be filled out anytime between Nov. 13-Nov. 29. CRD is requesting public input and said that it plays a critical role in ensuring that the location and design of mariculture zones align with community needs, environmental conservation and navigational safety. For more information on the public meeting, the proposed Jointer Creek mariculture zone or the oyster mariculture zone lottery process, please contact the Coastal Resources Division at 912-264-7218.
