HS Field Hockey: Several local public schools begin run in state tournament
Nov 04, 2024
The state tournament will conclude the first round on Tuesday, and there are several area teams that will begin their title chase.
Hopewell Valley, which has played well, heads to Voorhees in an always interesting No. 9 vs. No. 8 seed game.
Allentown, which was the CVC Tournament winner, will be looking to put that experience from a tough schedule to work facing Barnegat, and in the same South Jersey II bracket, Robbinsville has a tough task with Haddonfield.
Lawrence has some big-game pedigree and will host Roxbury and look to extend its season.
A very good Northern Burlington team is host to Mainland, and the young Greyhounds are ready to make some state tournament noise.
Here’s a look at each game.
North Jersey Group II
No. 9 Hopewell Valley (14-5) at No. 8 Voorhees (12-6-2), 2 p.m.
Coach’s Comment: “The team is excited to play and eager to get back out on the field against Voorhees,’’ said HV coach Pam Edwards. “We want to work hard as a solid unit up and down the field and leave it all out on the field.”
Key Players – Hopewell Valley: Senior Raina Jablonski 19 goals, 18 assists; senior Sierra Chow 21 goals, 12 assists; sophomore Zoe Lawler 16 goals, 10 assists; Theodora Milchanoski has eight shutouts in goal.
Key Players – Voorhees: Sophomore Christa Lenzinger 11 goals; sophomore Nadia DiRe 9 goals, 11 assists; senior Isabella Settembrini 7 goals, 9 assists; freshman Sophia Forsyth has 127 saves.
Hopewell Valley History: HV has six sectional titles with the last in 1986 and one state final appearance in 1985.
Outlook: Voorhees has won the last three meetings, including a 3-1 win a few weeks ago. But this has been a big-game Hopewell Valley team that has risen to the occasion in many ways, and after a late in the season three-game skid it has rebounded to win the last two. Voorhees has won four of the last five and will be a tough out for Hopewell.
South Jersey Group II
No. 14 Barnegat (8-8) at No. 3 Allentown (15-6), 4 p.m.
Coach’s Comment: “We are looking forward to the most exciting part of the season,’’ said first-year coach Kayla Peterson. “The girls have been challenged by many tough teams, we are hoping it pays off now. We are looking forward to Tuesday but not looking past any team that comes our way. Shore conference teams and South Jersey teams are always competitive, so we are taking it one day at a time, preparing to play our best field hockey.’’
Key Players – Barnegat: Senior Jayna Greenblatt 11 goals, 2 assists; senior Riley Fitzpatrick 9 goals, 8 assists; senior Ryanna Kennedy 7 goals, 3 assists; junior Jadeyn Bodziak has 147 saves.
Key Players – Allentown: Junior Ella Sluder 27 goals, 10 assists; junior Avery Gower 11 goals, 9 assists; senior Hailee Ladu 10 goals, 7 assists; junior Kelsey Loughlin 10 goals, 6 assists; senior Janeen Rukab 12 goals; Kylie Elefante, who holds the school record for saves, has 283 this season.
Allentown History: The Redbirds have won five sectional title with the last in 2013. They were co-champions with West Essex in 1997 and state runner-up in 2003.
Outlook: The Redbirds amped up the schedule adding Haddonfield and Bishop Eustace and snapping their nine-game winning streak, but the tough schedule has paid dividends and it should be a key in the tournament. Barnegat has lost four of six and is going to need a great game to stop Allentown. The Redbirds have plenty of weapons and need to take control early.
No. 15 Robbinsville (8-10-1) at No. 2 Haddonfield (12-4-2), 2 p.m.
Coach’s Comment: “We are a scrappy team that hustles every minute,’’ said Robbinsville coach Jen Didun. “We have a solid athletes all over the field, they have been moving the ball well and recovering smart on defense. It will come down to the details of staying disciplined and staying consistent. Our motto for the year has been All Out, All Game, All Season, and they have definitely accomplished that so far. I am proud of the progress they have made this year and am excited to see how we match up in the postseason.’’
Key Players – Robbinsville: Senior Julia Meddahi 10 goals, 3 assists; junior Ava Aldarelli 2 goals, 3 assists; junior Grace Miller 3 goals; sophomore Lynsey Parrott has a career-high 248 saves.
Key Players – Haddonfield: Senior Olivia Marthins 32 goals, 4 assists; senior Ava Polaifico 5 goals, 8 assists; senior Gigi Eden 6 goals, 4 assists; Ava Fasolo averages 6 saves a game.
Ravens History: Looking for first state title.
Outlook: There’s no denying this is a very tough task for the Ravens as Haddonfield is 8-0-2 in its last 10 games. This is a Haddonfield team that lost in the sectional finals last year. Robbinsville will need to play a possession game and take advantage of every opportunity.
North Jersey Group III
No. 11 Roxbury (11-9) at No. 6 Lawrence (12-7-1), 4 p.m.
Coach’s Comment: “We want to continue to be playing good field hockey, and if we do, we should do well,’’ said Lawrence coach Megan Errico. “We have a very good goalie and we have players that can score. We are playing good hockey and this team wants to keep playing.’’
Key Players – Roxbury: Senior Catie Colatrella 3 goals, 2 assists, senior Mia Decker 2 goals, 2 assists, sophomore Vanessa Pennella has 105 saves
Key Players – Lawrence: Senior Caroline Rotteveel 44 goals, 22 assists; senior Bella Scanella 7 goals, 5 assists; senior Peyton Valentino 6 goals; senior Tess Adolf has 297 saves.
Lawrence History: Looking for first state title.
Outlook: The Cardinals possess the state’s top scorer in Caroline Rotteveel and a strong supporting cast. Tess Adolf is solid in the cage, making Lawrence a very tough team. Roxbury comes to Lawrence having won 6-of-8 and will be a confident bunch hoping to pull the upset. Lawrence will need to take every early opportunity.
South Jersey Group III
No. 12 Mainland (10-5-3) at No. 5 Northern Burlington (12-4-2), 2 p.m.
Key Players – Mainland: Senior Elaina Dinofa 15 goals, 4 assists; senior Katherine Crozier-Carole 9 goals, 5 assists; freshman Callie Bean 5 goals, 2 assists; senior Emma Tomlin averages 9.3 saves per game.
Key Players – NBC: – Freshman Ella Morelli 17 goals, 7 assists; sophomore Grazella Carnassale 16 goals, 7 assists; junior Riley Pieloch 8 goals, 5 assists; junior Megan Renninger has nine shutouts in the goal.
Northern History: Won sectional title in 1999.
Outlook: The Greyhounds have plenty of offense with seven players in double digits in points, and they are the conference Liberty Division champs with an 8-0-2 division mark. Provided the moment is not too big for the ‘Hounds, they should come out on top. Mainland has a veteran team and will take advantage of every opportunity.
