ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – If you cast a vote in Bernalillo County this year, you may notice the sticker you get handed is more eye-catching than in years past.   That's thanks to local students, who used their artistic skills, voters can show off their civic pride.   "I thought it was really cute because it was different and unusual," said Laura Martinez, a voter.  The American flag, a skull, and a Zia symbol are a few of the designs Bernalillo County voters are sporting this year to say "I voted."  UNM opens new nurse training facility  "This is the sticker I was hoping for," said Robenette Bloom, a voter.  The sticker Bloom got was designed by APS fifth-grader Kieran Barns. One of the 12 APS students selected out of roughly 278 who entered the contest to design this year's stickers.   "Proud and like grateful, I guess," said Barnes, also stating he's excited to see people wear his design as it represents New Mexico.  He included the state flower (the yucca), state bug (tarantula hawk wasp), and the outline of the state.   "In the background, I have red, white, and blue because not a lot of people think New Mexico is in the United States,” said Barnes.  Another contest winner, Del Norte High School senior Aubrey Vanderlip, incorporated the Zia symbol into her "I voted" sticker. She's proud of what she has accomplished before she can even vote.   "Just to think that something I designed will go to all these special places, I just think it's a really big honor," said Senior, Aubrey Vanderlip.     "Keeping it related to New Mexico special to us because no one else in the country is going to have a sticker that looks like this," said Vanderlip.  The Bernalillo County Clerk's Office said they've seen a number of social media posts showing off the stickers.  It's something Clerk Linda Stover wanted to do back in 2020 but couldn't because of the pandemic.   PHOTOS: New Mexico experiences early-November snowfall "We've had young people that are 18 years old going into vote because they know these young kids that did these things," said Bernalillo County Clerk Linda Stover.  She's happy to get the youth involved.   “There's hope for our young people; they are involved in this election, and they want to be part of it,” said Stover.   “I'm happy because I voted, and everybody should feel that way when they vote. It's such a privilege." These stickers will only be handed out in this election unless the incoming county clerk decides to keep using the designs.
