MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD)- The safety of cyclists and pedestrians in Mount Pleasant is coming into question after multiple incidents over the last several weeks. Five pedestrians have been hit by a car in the last month. One at Moultrie Middle School, one at Lucy Beckham, and two people by Patriots Point. Town council members met this morning about what steps can be taken to protect people walking and riding their bikes. One cyclist spoke at the meeting on Monday, David Quick. Quick has had some close calls on the Mount Pleasant roadway, one of them he says was a near-death experience. "If I wasn't a hyperaware cyclist, I'd be dead, I seriously would have been dead," Quick said. Quick says it brought into focus the dangers cyclists face every day in Mount Pleasant, "I know how it feels. If you're not hypervigilant as a cyclist, you're going to get in trouble in Mount Pleasant." It's not just cyclists, it's walkers and runners too. Council member Daniel Brownstein says this reality is very alarming. "I'm concerned every day riding around town. I see people running red lights, I see people speeding," Brownstein said. Since January, there have been nearly 40 bicycle and pedestrian accidents in Mount Pleasant, but in 22 of those incidents, officials found the person on the bike or the pedestrian was a contributing factor Brownstein said after the council meeting Monday, that there are a few options to improve safety for everyone on the roadways, "I think we need more flexibility from the state legislature so that we can install red light cameras, I think that would have a meaningful impact." Council members also discussed asking police to enhance distracted driving enforcement. Quick said he hopes something is done about it urgently, "The solution isn't not riding your bike or walking, the solution is everyone coming together to make it safer." Council members said in January, they'll get the opportunity to sit down with state legislatures and put more pressure on them for red light cameras.
