Annual on-street leaf collection has started in Elgin On-street leaf collection for Elgin residents living within the city’s four designated areas is underway. In neighborhoods where collections are done, leaves should be raked to the street, along the curb or to the edge of the pavement, according to the city’s website. They also should be ready for pickup by 6 a.m. on the scheduled leaf collection day. Residents should avoid parking on the street on the scheduled collection days because leaf piles blocked by cars will not be picked up, the post said. Trash, branches and other yard waste should not be left in the piles. Leaves can also be placed in yard waste bags for free collection on regular garbage collection days now through Thursday, Dec. 5. The city encourages residents to mulch their leaves because they add nutrients to the soil that promote turf growth. In the event of snow, the collection will stop to allow for snow and ice control operations.
