Culinary students at Carson Middle School will soon have some new tools in their kitchen. The program recently received a $5,000.00 grant from the Rotary Club of Carson City. Club members surprised Culinary Arts teacher Tammy Borremans, who applied for the grant, in her classroom earlier this week.
“We are so excited about this!”, she said. “The money is going to be used to purchase a demonstration station with a viewing mirror and cooktop so the students can watch demonstrations more easily.” The money will also purchase new cookware, oven mitts, storage racks, funnels, tolling pins and pie mats.
The Rotary Club of Carson City awards the annual grant as part of its commitment to supporting and recognizing educational achievement. The club also funds college scholarships and other educational opportunities for local young people.
Borremans says the skills learned in her classroom are valuable whether or not the students go on to a culinary career. “Culinary Arts incorporates many different subjects with cooking, such as reading, math, and science in a real-world setting. But, even better than that, the students are learning important life skills such as cooking, budgeting, planning, cleaning, safety, teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, and perseverance.”
She lights up when talking about how the kids are already using what they have learned at home. “The students are going home and cooking at home and sending me pictures of what they've been doing. These kids are getting excited about going home and cooking something!”
