Eagles refusing to take Jaguars lightly
Nov 01, 2024
PHILADELPHIA — The Jacksonville Jaguars are 2-6 and coach Doug Pederson is hanging on by a thread. But Sunday, somehow only the Eagles’ third real home game of the season, is actually a big test for the Birds.
The Eagles have won three games in a row, all against losing opponents. But, especially in the last two weeks, they’ve looked like they’re supposed to look. They have dominated. They have executed in all phases.
They weren’t doing that earlier in the year, or even last year when they eked out a 10-1 start.
A loss Sunday would make everyone question this team’s legitimacy. But if the Birds deliver another beatdown against a bad team, it will be further evidence that they are coming together and deserve to be taken seriously.
“I’m not looking at (Jacksonville’s) record,” Eagles receiver A.J. Brown said. “It’s an NFL team. They’ve got professionals just like we do. That’s how you get shocked. When people (look past a team), they get shocked. They’ve got a really good front. They have guys on the back end who are really talented and play hard. We’ve got to get open fast and do what we need to do.”
In the NFL, what many folks call parity is often just mediocrity, or vice-versa, but that’s the league. The Eagles are 5-2 with a whole bunch of divisional games left to play. The Birds insist they’re not letting their foot off the gas.
“You just got to make sure you get everybody to play at our level and do what we do,” defensive end Brandon Graham said. “We can’t worry about their record. Them boys, they got a good team. I’ve seen their roster, they’ve got some good players. Sometimes it takes a little while for it to come together.”

When the schedule came out, there were lots of complaints about the Week 5 bye being too early. But after a rocky start, it gave quarterback Jalen Hurts and head coach Nick Sirianni a chance to get on the same page, and the entire team seems to have responded.
“We had some discussions there during the bye week and coming back, (about), what was our identity?” right tackle Lane Johnson said. “We hadn’t established that, and we knew we had to make some adjustments. Some of the guys, some of the leaders and veterans on the O-line, we had our fair share of talks. We just want the offense to be the best version of itself and win some games and hopefully score some points in the … first quarter.”

Cornerback Darius Slay (groin) and tight end Dallas Goedert (hamstring) didn’t practice Friday and are out for Sunday’s game. However, in good news, guards Mekhi Becton (concussion) and Landon Dickerson (knee), as well as defensive tackle Jalen Carter (shoulder) were all full participants and are expected to play against the Jags. Tight end Albert Okwuegbunam (abdomen) also was back to full action.
Still, Sirianni likes what he has seen from guard/tackle Tyler Steen filling in.
“Any time he had to block down on a tackle, I felt like he was getting really good displacement in that (last) game,” Sirianni said. “I think that’s something that he’s working really hard at. We’ve always known he had the ability to be able to move guys, and I think it has just come together for him these last couple weeks. You notice it in practice, and then it carries over to the game.
“He’s done a nice job, and I think that we all have a lot of confidence in him. His teammates have confidence in him, and they should because he’s stepped up. And he’s performed and helped us win some football games because of his play.”
