Reverend Monsignor Albert Kenney was elected on Friday by the College of Consultors, the Diocese announced.
The diocesan administrator has most of the same responsibilities as the bishop, but can't appoint a pastor or deal with situations regarding finances.
Kenney, 57, has been a priest in the Diocese for more than three decades. He recently served as moderator of the curia and was vicar general from 2011 until this past August.

He got his bachelor's degree from Providence College and graduated from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas-Angelicum, where he obtained two degrees in sacred theology.
Kenney first got the title of monsignor in 2011, when it was awarded to him by Pope Benedict XVI.
Kenney will serve in this capacity until a new bishop takes office.
