Covenant House hosts candle vigil to signal beginning of Homeless Youth Awareness Month

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — As the sun went down and the sky was re-lit with dozens of candles, symbolizing hope for a bright future for the youth homeless community.
"It was all about shedding light on the issues and being a beacon of light for the young people who are overcoming homelessness, and overcoming so many challenging obstacles that have gotten in their way," Covenant House CEO Rheneisha Robertson said.

According to the Covenant House, about four million children and teens experience homelessness each year, and they use the month of November to bring awareness to this issue.
"I mean these aren't grizzled old folks who have been around all along. These are our kids, and I don't know how we sleep at night knowing there are kids on the streets; so yeah every year it's good not only this month, but every month, to think about youth homelessness and focus on it," Covenant House volunteer Joe Hyer said.
This event comes just days after about 75 people were removed from an encampment under an overpass near the Caesars Superdome before the Taylor Swift concerts.
"We know this is a complex issue. It's on the hearts and minds of all of the community members," Robertson said.

While the homeless youth population is not often found in encampments like these, workers with the Covenant House say it can likely be their future if not for the proper help.
"We're going to continue to advocate for the resources to keep young people off the street, and we're going to continue to make sure that everyone understands how important it is as a preventative measure to make sure young people are safely housed, so that it significantly reduces the amount of adults that are unhoused and in encampments," Robertson said.
