HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Pouncey Tract Road in western Henrico County had doubled the number of pickleball players it can accommodate with a $4.4 million expansion. The illuminated 12-court complex, which includes two championship-caliber courts, will officially open alongside the park's existing stock of 12 pickleball courts at 10 a.m. on Nov. 2. “It will give us the ability to potentially host regional and national tournaments," said Henrico County Director of Parks and Recreation John Zannino. "And with 24 courts at this location, it will become an ideal location for pickleball tournament organizers to host tournaments here." According to the 2024 USA pickleball growth report, pickleball continues to be the fastest growing sport in the country, having grown more than 200% since 2020. "The existing 12 courts on this complex are constantly busy and full, showing that there is a demand in the community and which really started the process for how could we expand,” said Zannino. "This is really a sport for everyone. I mean, it started out with a lot of seniors playing, but now it's all ages, all ethnicities." In addition to increasing Henrico's total number of pickleball courts to 38, the project has added shaded seating areas, 86 parking spots and ADA-accessible sidewalks to the park.
