GREEN BAY, WI (WFRV) - Everyone at Local 5 wishes our community a safe and happy Halloween.
Our crews caught up with some trick-or-treaters in Green Bay.
Local 5's Michele McCormack is of Irish descent and shared with viewers the origins of this holiday.
"It traces back to Ireland and people think I say this just because I'm of Irish descent. But it's true," McCormack told viewers of Local 5 News at 6:30 p.m.
"It was an ancient Celtic festival where it was believed that this life and the afterlife are their closest on this night. I was always told you dressed up to either ward spirits away or welcome them back for a visit."
Irish immigrants brought their traditions and celebrations to the United States in the 19th century.
The Celts called it Samhain. That's an Irish word pronounced "SAH-win."
The tradition of carving "Jack-o'-Lanterns" also started in Ireland but instead of pumpkins, they used turnips.
