NDCL vs. CVCA volleyball: Lions take fiveset thriller against Royals
Oct 31, 2024
A back-and-forth regional semifinal was on tap from Norwalk when North Coast Conference foes NDCL and CVCA battled Oct. 31. The Lions and Royals met in the regular season with NDCL taking both games and only dropping a set.
In the semifinal, they traded the first four sets with CVCA taking momentum into the fifth set. But the Lions claimed an early lead in the fifth set and didn’t look back in a 3-2 victory.
NDCL will play Toledo St. Ursula in a Division III regional final on Nov. 2 at Norwalk. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Lions and Royals traded the first two sets with 26-24 scores. But NDCL controlled the third set and took it 25-16. A large part of that was because of the swing of freshman Frankie Brkic.
She recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs.
But the Royals battled back and took the fourth set 25-22 and forced the fifth and final set.
NDCL relied on its diversity across the front to be able to take the final frame. McKenna Morrison finished with nine kills and eight digs while Grace Gaeta and Tora Forte had eight kills each through the contest.
Coupled with the five kills and nine blocks of Ava Hills, the 24 digs from Abby Tolin and 17 digs from Grace Daniels, the Lions took the final frame 15-8 for their third straight regional final appearance.
