Mary Cariola students dazzle during Halloween tradition

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A local organization aimed at helping kids and young adults with disabilities brought ghouls and goblins of all backgrounds to life Thursday.
In honor of Halloween, Rochester's Mary Cariola Center ensured its students, staff and families had an inclusive space to celebrate the spooky holiday.
"A Cariola tradition is a parade," said Karen Zandi, President and CEO of the Mary Cariola Center. "Some of our children and their parents won't want to go out when it's evening time. They're tired, they've had enough for the day. But they like to participate in activities just like their siblings."

The longtime tradition allows kids to parade through the hallways in costumes while making some stops. While usually a time to celebrate, Zandi acknowledged the challenges Halloween may present to some.
"Some of our kids tolerate different things in terms of costumes. What's itchy, what's not itchy, do I like my face covered, can I not tolerate that," Zandi explained. "It really gives a safe environment for our students to participate in a fun activity. Dress up - who doesn't want to be a superhero today? Practice their communication skills with their speech therapist, practice their social skills..."

At each stop, kids were given the chance to take part in a variety of Halloween-themed activities, including arts and crafts.
