(FOX40.COM) -- An attempted robbery at a storage facility in San Joaquin County nearly ended with a deputy being shot by an armed 'vigilante' on Thursday morning, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office. While chasing two suspects from a storage facility in the 3900 block of Clark Drive in Stockton at around 1:30 a.m., deputies came under fire from an unknown gunman. Reward offered for information on illegal dumpers in Del Paso Heights The gunman was the grandson of a man who lived in the area and had been alerted of the law enforcement activity by his home security camera. The sheriff's office said that the grandfather called his grandson, who then armed himself with an AR-15 and started searching for the suspects in a golf cart. Believing he was following the suspects, the man spotted the two deputies at a nearby Buddhist Temple and without announcing his presence, fired two shots at the deputies. The deputies chose not to fire back and shouted commands at the man, who complied without incident. He was then taken into custody. "Not only did this jeopardize the safety of our deputies, but the surrounding community who could have been struck by a stray bullet," the sheriff's office wrote.
